It may be possible to compete in a marathon in your first year, but for most the goal will be to enter a marathon for the following year, allowing plenty of time to slowly build.

Beginner or Intermediate
Most marathon entrants are people who already run regularly and are looking to challenge themselves. Unfortunately there are many who are either unaware of marathon training or feel it is not necessary. Even regular runners need to train for a marathon and this needs to start 4, 5 or even 6 months before the marathon. As well as building up your distances, particular attention needs to be paid to improving specific muscle groups, managing your pace and improving your breathing.
Many runners who compete in their first marathon describe “hitting the wall” at around the 20 mile point, due to complete and utter exhaustion. Energy levels drop considerably risking injury or even complete collapse.
Proper training, preparation, nutrition and advice can help you overcome these sort of problems.
